General requirements

  • This is a graduate certificate program meaning applicants need to be graduates of a Music Industry Arts or an equivalent college diploma.
  • Applicants should have a solid background, knowledge, and appreciation of all types of music and sound.
  • Advanced computer and editing skills are required.

What kind of work could I do when I graduate?

Graduates of this program may go on to become a

Audio post-production editor, recordist, mixer, or producer.

Places you may find yourself employed include

Post-production houses for game/web animation/film/television/advertising, multi-media companies, film sets, television and radio stations, theatre and dance companies, sound recording studios, web audio design, industrial and corporate media, live audio production, and anywhere that sound production and/or sound mixing is required.

Typical working conditions for this kind of work:

  • Evening, weekend, and holiday work is common
  • Work long hours
  • Adhere to strict deadlines
  • Need a critical ear for determining musical pitch, rhythm, timbre, and layering of production elements

Tasks a graduate may do in the workplace

  • Capture and process field recordings of dialog, ambience, room tone, music, and sound effects
  • Produce audio with remote client tools - ISDN, Skype, Source-Connect RTS, etc
  • Mix, layer, synchronize, edit recordings to produce market-ready deliverables for commercials, film/game/television/web animation soundtracks, multi-media presentations for later broadcast or retail sale
  • Utilize virtual instruments
  • Collaborate with other various teams of a production unit
  • Discuss sound requirements with the production director, sound designer, artists, or their representatives
  • Develop a sound plot and/or storyboard
  • Mix and produce audio in mono, stereo, and surround sound
  • Work with audio consoles- small and large format
  • Select music and sound effects from a sound library and/or record them
  • Develop and program playback of created sound plots using a variety of audio equipment
  • Balance amplification, equalize frequency response, and mix sound during technical rehearsals and sound checks based on input from directors, sound designers, or performers
  • Conduct system tests before performances to ensure all sound equipment is placed and working properly
  • Pitch work to current and future clients
