What academic skills do I need to be successful in the program?

Arts & Literacy High school courses in Business Studies or Business and Technological Communication would be beneficial.

Math & Science Grade 12 high school Math would be beneficial, but grade 11 Math is accepted.

Applicants who do not have a math background should consider the one-year Business Fundamentals program.  This program is recommended for students who require or desire academic upgrading, particularly in Mathematics and English, before pursuing a business diploma program.  Students who successfully complete the Business Fundamentals program may be eligible for admission to Level 2 of any two-year business diploma program at Fanshawe College.

Technology Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Office, email, Internet).

* Practical Elements Students participate in a mentorship program shadowing an HR professional for a total of 60 hours.

What kind of work could I do when I graduate?

Graduates of this program may go on to become an

HR generalist, HR assistant, labour relations officer, compensation clerk, pension and benefits assistant, payroll clerk, recruiter, or training and development assistant.

  • Office environment
  • Standard weekday hours

HR departments in manufacturing, health care, education, or government.

Tasks a graduate may do in the workplace

  • Process, verify and register documentation relating to personnel activities such as staffing, recruitment, training, grievances, performance evaluations and classifications
  • Maintain and update manual and computerized filing and registration systems, and compile and prepare reports and documents relating to personnel activities
  • Respond to telephone and written enquiries from staff and the general public regarding personnel matters
  • Arrange for advertising or posting of job vacancies, assist in screening and rating of job applicants, and conduct reference checks
  • Administer and score employment tests, such as keyboarding and proofreading tests
  • Arrange for in-house and external training activities
