Chemical Laboratory Technology - Science Laboratory CLT

→ three co-op work terms
→ 8-10 hours/week in the lab

Math & Science Strong math skills needed: students who do not have the required level of comfort and ability with math may want to consider Fanshawe’s Pre-Technology Program
Courses in chemistry are required, but courses in physics and biology would be an asset
 
Arts & Literacy Applicants should be able to communicate effectively in English (written reports)
High school courses in Business and Technological Communication would be beneficial
 
Technology Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Office, email, Internet)
Moderate use of student portal system, students need to check email and posts several times per week

What kind of work could I do when I graduate?

Graduates of this program may go on to become an 

Laboratory assistant; Research assistant; Applied Research and Development Laboratory Technologist; Educational Laboratory Technologist; Process and Quality Control Laboratory Technologist ; Food and Beverage Industry Technologist ; Petrochemical Company Laboratory Technologist; or Technical Sales Manager

Typical working conditions for this kind of work:

  • May work alone or in teams
  • May be required to work shifts
  • Work with hazardous substances and must observe appropriate safety precautions
  • Lifting up to 10 kg may be required

Industrial plants or laboratories, quality control industry, research laboratories , process and quality control laboratories, product development, or technical sales

Tasks a graduate may do in the workplace

  • Set up and maintain specific or general laboratory areas
  • Prepare reagents, perform analyses and maintain equipment in laboratories
  • Carry out chemical reactions
  • Prepare standards and samples
  • Analyze samples using bench methods and sophisticated instrumentation
  • Prepare reports and required documentation
  • Maintain and upgrade laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Manage projects and make presentations about results
  • Conduct field and laboratory tests
  • Operate, maintain and calibrate equipment for field tests and surveys
  • Isolate, identify and prepare specimens for study
  • Grow cultures under controlled conditions
  • Collect field data
  • Maintain quality control and assurance
