Hairstylist [Apprenticeship] HSA


This program is only available to apprentices who hold a training agreement with a salon.

  • This program is offered as a part-time evening program, where apprentices continue to work, but take classes from February to June ( level 1) and September to January (level 2).
  • Classes are Monday and Tuesday nights from 4 pm to 10 pm.
  • Each level runs for 20 weeks, or 240 hours in length.

What academic skills do I need to be successful in the program?

Apprenticeship programs are run at Fanshawe College in partnership with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. You can not apply to an apprenticeship program through the Ontario Colleges Application Service. When an apprentice has been in the salon for a year they will get a seat offer (letter form) from the MTCU offering them a seat in our Level 1 Apprentice Program. The employer must register you as an apprentice with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Arts & Literacy A grade 12 English course would be beneficial academic preparation for this program.

Technology Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Office, email, Internet)

Typical working conditions for this kind of work

  • Hairstylists work indoors in a clean environment.
  • They must stand all day and sometimes work through their breaks.
  • They may be required to work weekends and evenings, and put in extra hours at peak times.

Tasks a graduate may do in the workplace

  • Keep work stations clean and sanitize tools such as scissors and combs.
  • Cut, trim and shape hair or hairpieces, based on customers' instructions, hair type and facial features, using clippers, scissors, trimmers and razors.
  • Analyze patrons' hair and other physical features to determine and recommend beauty treatment or suggest hair styles.
  • Schedule client appointments.
  • Color, bleach and tone, perform high lights, using a applicator bottle, brush or foils.
  • Update and maintain customer information records, such as beauty services provided.
  • Shampoo, rinse, condition and dry hair and scalp or hairpieces with water, liquid soap, or other solutions.
  • Operate cash registers to receive payments from patrons.
  • Demonstrate and sell hair care products and cosmetics.
  • Develop new styles and techniques.
