Plumber PLA


This is a block release program, meaning that apprentices take an 8-week break from work to attend classes full time at the college. During these blocks of classes, you will have:

  • 240 hours of class
  • 20 – 30 minutes of study/assignments required for each hour in class
  • 35 hr/week commitment minimum (class + study)

What academic skills do I need to be successful in the program?

Apprenticeship programs are run at Fanshawe College in partnership with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. You can not apply to an apprenticeship program through the Ontario Colleges Application Service. Your first step is finding an employer who will support you in your apprenticeship training. The employer must register you as an apprentice with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Arts & Literacy Good reading skills are necessary.

Math & Science Good math skills are necessary. Grade 12 math and science are beneficial preparation for this apprenticeship.

Technology Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Office, email, Internet, checking student portal for course material).

  • Physical strength, stamina and agility
  • Mechanical ability
  • The ability to work alone or with others
  • Customer service skills

Useful background experience for this program would be

Understanding of construction industry, tools and equipment.

Construction contractors, plumbing repair shops and large organizations, or self-employed.

Typical working conditions for plumbers:

  • Working conditions vary from one job to another
  • Little protection from the weather when plumbers are roughing in, more protection for finishing, and often comfortable conditions for maintenance and repair work
  • May stand all day, work in cramped, awkward positions, or be required to lift and move items that weigh over 20 kilograms
  • Employment prospects vary considerably with seasonal and economic climates

Tasks a graduate may do in the workplace

  • Study the building plans and specifications to determine the layout for plumbing and related materials
  • Locate and mark positions for connections and fixtures
  • Cut holes through walls and floors to accommodate pipes
  • Select the type and size of pipe required and measure, cut, thread, bend, clamp, solvent cement or solder pipe
  • Assemble and install valves and fittings
  • Join pipe sections and secure them in position
  • Test pipe systems for leaks
  • Install underground storm sanitary and water piping system
