This program includes field placements, and is offered at the London Oxford St. Campus.


Workload Level

  • 5 courses in the first semester
  • 2 hours of study/assignments required for each hour in class
  • 17.5 hours of class (35-40 hour/week commitment)

Arts & Literacy: proficient reader, writer, speaker in English.

Technology: proficient user of educational technology.

  • Enjoy working with people from other cultures and languages
  • Helpful and patient with language learners
  • Comfortable making public presentations
  • Interested in language and language acquisition

Useful background experience for this program would be:

Travel or living/working in another culture. Post-secondary study in English language/literature and/or linguistics, education, psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology. Teaching or coaching experience.

What kind of work could I do when I graduate?

Graduates of this program may go on to become a teacher of English to speakers of other languages, or work with newcomers to Canada.

 Places you may find yourself employed include

Language programs in Canada or abroad, settlement agencies, community-based newcomer programs.

Typical working conditions for this kind of work:

  • P/T or FT contract employment, usually in a classroom setting
  • Self-employment as a tutor or language coach

Tasks a graduate may do in the workplace:

  • Classroom teaching
  • Designing teaching materials
  • Developing curriculum
  • Teaching on-line
  • Assisting newcomers in settlement process
