General requirements

  • This is a graduate certificate program meaning applicants need to be graduates of a college diploma in broadcasting, media design, and graphic design or hold an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Applicants should have experience in at least two of the following areas; Digital Image Manipulation, Graphic Design, Video Editing, Photography and Videography

What kind of work could I do when I graduate?

Graduates of this program may go on to become

Video or film editors, visual effect supervisors, compositors, animators, and motion graphics artists, digital visual effects artists, compositors, motion tracking specialists, matte painters, or lighting and shading specialists.

Places you may find yourself employed include

Large or small production houses, media and design departments in film, broadcast, visual effects, gaming, corporate, advertising and new media sectors.

Typical working conditions for this kind of work:

  • Sit for long periods of time
  • Work under the pressure of constant deadlines

Tasks a graduate may do in the workplace

  • Design visual effects sequences using storyboarding and pre-visualization that meet production requirements
  • Create professional motion graphic animations that communicate messages for a variety of purposes
  • Use filmmaking terminology to communicate effectively throughout all stages of production
  • Complete the production of live action plates for use in visual effects
  • Manage the production of visual effects projects to meet production schedules
  • Identify hardware and software protocols specific to the field of visual effects
  • Analyze images and physical sets to digitally re-create lights, cameras, locations and objects
  • Create photo-real images to match live action footage by the application of advanced rendering techniques
  • Recreate natural phenomenon by using appropriate particle or dynamic effects
  • Integrate 2D and/or 3D computer generated imagery and live action elements using compositing techniques
  • Create customized tools through software or scripting to allow for more advanced application of visual effects techniques
  • Work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams on the production of visual effect

** Applicants to this program may also be interested in the Contemporary Media: Theory and Production collaborative degree program with Brock University. Upon graduation, students earn a four year Bachelor of Arts and an Ontario College graduate certificate. Students begin at the university and come to Fanshawe in their fourth year.
